BNP on Tuesday protested the Prime Minister’s remarks about the reelection of the party’s chairperson and senior vice chairman, terming those devoid of political etiquette. “The way the Awami League leader talked about them is devoid of political norms,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir pointing at the Prime Minister. He further said, “If we asses the country’s history, we’ll find cases filed against political leaders during every democratic movement, and they were made accused.
So it is clear that what was said about the BNP chairperson and senior vice chairman is out of political manner…we strongly protest and condemn the comments.” The BNP acting secretary general came up with the remarks while inaugurating a rally of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of BNP office marking the International Women’s Day.
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described the reelection of Khaleda Zia as BNP chairperson and Tarique Rahman as its senior vice chairman as a stage-managed drama and said now two accused are this party’s top leaders.
“Whom they (BNP) have actually elected-there two accused, one (Khaleda) is an accused in a case of misappropriating orphans’ money and another (Tarique) in the Aug 21 grenade case – and his (Tarique’s) name is also there in Interpol’s wanted list… if this is the case, what this party can deliver!” she told a public rally at
Suhrawardy Udyan in the city marking the historic March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Earlier on Sunday, Khaleda Zia was reelected BNP chairperson unopposed, while her son Tarique Rahman elected the party’s senior vice chairman also unchallenged before the party’s national council session.
The Mohila Dal brought out the rally from BNP central office and it ended at the same point after parading Nightingale crossing. Fakhrul alleged that the country is now passing through a very critical time as there is no democracy and people’s right here. “No one’s right is ensured in a country where democracy is obliterated. Now women have no security and dignity in the country as their rights are being snatched.”
Voicing deep concern over the growing incidents of child killing and repression on women, he said the number of incidents of child killing and violence against women occurred in the last one year have broken all the previous records. “These incidents are happening now as the country is ruled by an undemocratic regime.”
“On this day of International Women’s Day, we greet all women and we want to say we’ re always with them. We hope the women of Bangladesh will be vocal for restoration of democracy.”
