The Supreme Court has rejected a plea of BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, ordering him to submit the explanation of his comment on judiciary as an affidavit today (Tuesday).
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha gave the order on Monday after turning down the plea of Mirza Fakhrul submitted through his lawyer Advocate Zainul Abedin.
The apex court also fixed today for the hearing on his ‘leave-to appeal’ against a High Court order that granted him limited bail in three cases filed over arson and vandalism.
Advocate Zainul Abedin told media that they could not file Mirza Fakhrul’s explanation in written form due to time shortage and the court has asked for submitting it as an affidavit.
Earlier on February 18, the SC asked the BNP leader to give explanation for his comment on judiciary by February 22. The SC gave the order during a hearing on the petitions filed by Mirza Fakhrul seeking bail extension in the three violence cases filed against him with Paltan Police Station in the city.
The court also fixed February 22 for passing order on his petitions. The court re-fixed the date February 23 (today), saying that it would give an order on the day after hearing.
Mirza Fakhrul at a party meeting in Sylhet on February 7 accused the government of controlling the judiciary. He said, “All the democratic institutions have been destroyed in a planned way. There is no democracy in the country and the judiciary is not independent.”
