BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday demanded immediate resignation or removal of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam for bribing Chhatra League leaders.
“There is an interesting news item that the offence of demanding bribe at JU has been named as ‘fair share’. This means the percentage they (BCL leaders) demanded was their ‘fair share’. The University VC has already given Tk 1 crore as bribe,” he said.
The senior BNP leader was speaking at a human-chain programme, organized by the Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding immediate release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul said, “Why should only two students leaders (BCL president and general secretary) be removed? The Vice Chancellor should either resign or be sacked immediately.”
Amid various controversies, BCL President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and General Secretary Golam Rabbani were removed from their respective posts on Saturday.
Fakhrul further said, corruption has grasped every sector and institutions, including health, education and judiciary, as he alleged that
there is no accountability of the present government.
“The VC and deans of Dhaka University admitted students secretly at night without taking admission test. So, which institution is now free from corruption?” he wanted to know.
Calling upon the country’s people to stand firm for their rights and release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the BNP leader also said, “None will give us our rights, we’ve to snatch our rights.”
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The government detained party Chairperson Khaleda Zia with the motive of killing her in jail.”
He said: “If Khaleda Zia is released from jail, then she will unite the people, stage protests, and arrange movements for democracy.”
“That is why the government is afraid to free her, and has kept her detained over false allegations,” he added.
BNP leaders Fazlur Rahman, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Shirin Sultana and Sadek Ahmed Khan of Muktijoddha Dal participated in the programme, presided over by the organisation’s vice president Mizanur Rahman Khan.
