Fake medicines worth Tk. 55 lakh seized

Customs Intelligence at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport seized fake and contraband medicines worth around Tk 55 lakh from two passengers in separate incidents on Friday night.
Sources at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said they had information that Rakibul Hasan Sumon, a passenger of US Bangla airlines boarded into the flight no BS-110 from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport along with fake cancer medicines.
Based on the information, the CIID team challenged Sumon when he was about to leave the domestic terminal along with his luggage after the flight was landed at the airport at around 9:30 pm.
After searching his luggage, fake versions of medicines of a famed local drug company, usually used for chemotherapy of cancer treatment, were recovered, said director general of the CIID Dr Shahidul Islam adding that present market value of the seized medicines worth around Tk 5 lakh.
In another incident, the CIID team challenged another passenger named Abdul Mannan from Thailand as he was leaving green channel escaping scanner of the customs hall after arriving at the airport at around 10:30 pm by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Searching two luggage of Mannan, eight types of medicines -Diane (6216 pieces), Nac long (400), Madiplot (1000), Concor (1000), Diutropan (900), Methycobal (900), Resincolestiramina (400), Mestinon were recovered, said the DG of the CIID.
Present market value of the seized contraband medicines is about Tk 50 lakh. The medicines are usually use for treatment of cardiac, hypertension, liver and urological diseases, he said.
