The Awami League’s high-command is very much annoyed with the frequent use of two words -“Awami” and “League”– by some mushroomed organizations, as those are hampering the image of ruling party being involved in extortion and other activities.
These organizations are also using address of AL headquarters on the Bangabandhu Avenue in their posters, banners, leaflets and other printing materials, whereas there is no existence of their offices in the given addresses. The situation has gone to such an extent that several AL leaders have demanded police action to resist the illegal acts.
According to available information, more than 200 mushroomed organizations are now using the name of “Awami”, “League”, “Bangamata”, “Sheikh Russell”, “Jononetri”, “Muktijuddha” and “Digital”. The latest version is “Bangladesh Awami Sajeeb Wazed Joy League”, which went viral on the social media, especially the facebook.
Recently, senior AL leaders in presence of party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader sat in a meeting at party president’s Dhanmondi office over the issue and unanimously took decision not to allow anyone to use the words “Awami” or “League” and names of Bangabandhu’s family members for someone’s personal interest. The meeting also decided to issue a press release with detailing the matter, party sources said.
There is widespread allegation that a section of AL leaders openly patronize such organizations and often take part in their meetings as chief or special guests. The leaders also sometimes give such kind of statements which do not go in line with AL policy and ideology, it is also alleged.
As per party constitution, the AL has six associate and two brotherly organizations those can carry “Awami” or “League” words. The associate organizations are: AL Jubo League, Sechhasewbak League, Mohila League, Jubo Mohila League, Krishak League, Tanti League. Besides, two botherly organizations are Chhatra League and Sramik League. Another associate organization Awami Aynjibi Parishad does not bear the word “League”.
Except the above organizations, none could introduce itself as associate or brotherly front of AL using the words “Awami” or “League”, the sources said.
“A section of party workers are trying to take benefit by introducing such organizations using AL name and office address. These organizations have been mushroomed when AL was sworn in power for second consecutive term…It is also true that, some of AL leaders often attend
meetings called by those organizations. It is very unfortunate,” AL Presidium member Kazi Zafarullah said recently.
Expressing severe dissatisfaction at the activities of these fake organizations, another AL Presidium member Col [retd] Faruk Khan said that the AL was going to take legal action against them for tarnishing the image of the ruling party.
There are some names of such organizations: Jononetri Sheikh Hasina Kendriya League, Jononetri Sheikh Hasina Kendriya Sangsad, Awami Prochar League, Awami Trinomul League, Bangla Awami Sonar Bangla League, Awami Samobay League, Jatiya Rickshaw Van Sramik League, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik League, Bangladesh Awami Hawkers League, Awami Bastuhara Kalyan Samity, Bangabandhu Saynik League, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Prajommo League, Jatiya Shishu Kishore League, Awami Tarun League, etcetera.
