At least 10 people, including a schoolgirl, were killed in separate road crashes in the city and five other districts on Tuesday soon after conclusion of the 19-day long (Jan 15 to Feb 2) ‘Traffic Discipline Fortnightly’ programme.
The authorities filed 1,12,558 cases against different vehicles and Tk 5,71,53,600 were also realised for violation of traffic rules and dumped 471 cars and 14,157 other vehicles were put on the wrecker for similar offenses.
A large member of drivers, helpers and commuters were seen to violate traffic rules, including use of mobile phones and boarding on running vehicles considered as one the key causes of accelerating road accidents.
In the capital, a 10-year-old girl was run over by a microbus at Uttara when she was on her way to school this morning.
The deceased was identified as Faiza Tahsina Shuchi, 10, and a student of Diabari Milestone School. She was the daughter of Faizul Islam, Assistant Editor of the Daily Ittefaq.
She was on her way to school along with her father in Diabari area around 7:00am when a microbus crushed her under the wheel, said Turag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Muktakim.
Her father rushed her to Bangladesh Medical College in Uttara, but doctors declared her dead, the police officer said.
The microbus was seized, but the driver managed to flee.
At Badda, A 42-year old vendor man Shaheen, and night guard Kabir Hossain, 45, died after a bus veered off the road and ploughed the footpaths of Baridhara’s Coca Cola bus stand in the morning.
The two died on the spot. The Badda-bound Agradut bus managed to flee the spot. The bodies have been taken to Dhaka Medical College morgue.
Meanwhile, an unidentified woman around 45 years of age was run over by a bus in Malibagh’s Mouchak area around 5:00am. She was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, In-charge of DMCH police outpost.
In Sirajganj, a local leader of Awami League was killed in a road accident in Salanga in the district on Tuesday morning.
Deceased Abdul Jalil, 55, was the General Secretary of Awami League, Ward No 1 under Hatikumrul Union in Ullapara upazila, said Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Shaheen Reza.
In Gopalganj, two persons, including a bank official were killed and eight others injured when a Kotalipara-bound bus from Gopalganj skid ded of from the road at Khelna in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj district in the morning.
Deceased Nurul Islam, 40, was a cash officer of Kotalipara Branch of BASIC Bank Limited, and Momena Begum, 25, wife of Shahid Molla, was a resident of East Kotalipara area, said Sadar Police Station Officer-In-Charge (OC) Md Monirul Islam.
The driver was engaged in mobile phone, while he was steering the bus, the OC said.
In Natore, another bank official was killed when a motorcycle hit him when he was trying to cross the road without signal at Ahmedpur in Boraigram upazila in the district. The deceased has been identified as Helal Hossain, 30, a cash officer of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank of Boraigram Branch.
In Kushtia, an youth was crushed by a speedy truck at Alfa Mor near the district town in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Mithun, 25, from Mirpur Upazila of the district, said Kushtia Model Police Station OC Nasir Uddin.
In Joypurhat, a van driver was killed when a tractor hit his van at Pachmatha in Panchbibi upaziila of the district. The dedceased was identified as Amzad Hossain, 50.
