Amar Ekushey Book Fair: ‘Fairy tale’ books catch children’s interest

Amar Ekushey Book Fair have elapsed its 13 days, with the Poetry books dominating as per the publication figure, but the categories of this book are not catching public interest.
A total of 1,555 New books have been published till thirteen consecutive days of the fair where 359 books belongs to poetry circle.
Although, a large number of poetry books have
been published at the fair, the book-lovers are not too interested in buying this book. Besides, the book-lovers raised questions about the quality of the poetry books.
Children’s are choosing fairy tale books, ghost stories and science fiction books more according to stalls attendants.
“Fairy tale’ books are the best preference among kids. Science fiction books are attracting 10-13 year’s children,” Saidur Islam, a sales attended of ‘Shishu Bela’ publication, said.
“Purchasers are not interested in poetry books. If other books are sold hundreds of copies, we may expect selling one copy of poetry book only,” said Neepa, stall attendant of Tamralipi publication, said.
Titon, a consumer of the fair, said “I don’t like reading poetry books of current generation. The poems like Kazi Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das have a touch of life and connection with people. But I can’t find any of this in the poetry of the present time.”
However, the state ministry have decided to extended the fair till 17 March.
On Thursday, February 24, a discussion was held titled “Birth Centenary Tribute: Satyajit Ray” on 4.00 pm.
