Referring to a “shootout” spree during the ongoing countrywide anti-narcotic drives, Sultana Kamal, human rights activist and Trustee of Transparency International, Bangladesh, yesterday said, extrajudicial killings are violating human rights. No wrongdoer canbe punished without proper investigation.
She expressed her concern during a ‘Meet the Press’ event at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Monday.
The Center for Social Activism, Network of Non-Mainstream Marginalised Communities and two other human rights groups organized the event.
“Extrajudicial killings continue unabated in the country. It is a matter of grave concern,” also said.
To kill wrongdoers including drug dealers in crossfire is a violation of human rights: “The offenders should be brought to justice, but this is not happening here.”
Sultana said, it is illegal to use firearms as per whims in the name of self defense.
Centre for Social Activism’s Coordinator Lisa Hayat said that the UN Human Rights Council had discussed the human rights situation in Bangladesh for its universal periodic review during a meeting in Geneva on May 14.
The meeting expressed concern at the overall human rights situation in Bangladesh, she said.
As many as 105 countries made 250 recommendations for the improvement of human rights in Bangladesh, Lisa added.
