Bangladesh is waiting to have an official response from India to its request for extradition of Narayanganj multiple murders accused Nur Hossain, arrested by Anti-Terrirism Squad of West Bengal police along with three accomplices earlier this week, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam said Tuesday.
“We have written to the Indian authorities in this regard, and are keenly waiting for their response,” the state minister told reporters when he was approached for comments on the extradition process of Nur Hossain.
Alam, however, added that he can only comment on the issue after getting India’s official response, as the Indian government was yet to officially convey the report of the arrest of Nur Hossain.
“We cannot comment on the media reports. The government will let the media know once it got the official feedback from India,” added Alam while he was emerging from a courtesy call with visiting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen at Hotel Sonargaon in the city.
The state minister said the government has got support from the Interpol over his (Nur) arrest.
Nur Hossain was arrested June 14 in Kolkata under Arms Act and Foreigners Act for illegal trespass into Indian territory without valid travel documents and for illegal possession of a weapon, according to media reports.
Officials at the foreign office said, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday in a letter requested the Indian Government for extradition of the gruesome Narayanganj seven murders’ prime accused Nur Hossain.
“The letter was sent to the Indian Foreign Ministry through the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh,” an official of the foreign office said.
He added, the Foreign Ministry sent the official letter to the Indian authorities following the request from the Home Ministry.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan on Monday said his ministry had sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry to take necessary steps to bring back Nur Hossain from Kolkata.
Asaduzzaman also said the Indian authorities are yet to officially inform Bangladesh about Nur’s arrest.
He added: “We have taken steps to bring him back. Now we are waiting for the official documents from India.”
Official sources said, Nur Hossain could be brought back using two ways, the extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India that came into effect in October last year or with the help of the Interpol.
