Extortionist held in city

Rana Chowdhury who had demanded toll from AK Azaz Chowdhury, Managing Director of Ha-Mim group, was arrested from city’s Dhanmondi area on Saturday night.
 He used to collect toll introducing himself as son of Abul Khair, MP of Madaripur, Shibchar. Even he used to claim that his mother is an influential politician and director of South East Bank, police sources said. He used to live in a rented flat in city’s posh Dhanmondi Residential Area on a monthly payment of Tk. 40,000, police said.
Rana has no academic background but he used to
send messages through his cell phones to different wealthy people for collection of tolls with threats of dire consequences in case of failure to comply to his demand.
In primary interrogation Rana said, he is married to a doctor who works in city’s Heart Foundation. She is a daughter of a former judge, Rana told the police. Having realized that she has been cheated his wife wanted to desert him but out of fear she could not do so, Rana told the police.
On 27 March he had threatened Ak Azad Chowdhury of dire consequences through a SMS if he failed to pay him his demanded amount of money. AK Azad filed a general diary with Tejgaon police station in this connection.
Rana has been living in Dhaka since 1999. He hails from Sri Krishnadi village under Rajoir thana of Madaripur. His father is a farmer. Though he introduces himself as a student of Jagannath University but he has no formal education, police said. He, however, is smart in his dress and manner, police said.
Assistant Commissioner Mahmud Nasir Jony conducted the raid for tracing Rana following the filing of the GD against him.
