Extensive wheat cultivation has been taken up in which farmers expecting additional production in the district this current year.
Agriculture expert sources said fair price of wheat and boost production in the last year have encouraged farmers to bring more land under wheat cultivation in the district.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources 8,890 hectares of land with a production target 27,550 tonnes have been brought under wheat cultivation this year.
The cultivation of wheat is 395 hectares higher than the last year which will produce 1,224 tonnes additional production this year.
According to upazila wise break-up of land is as follows: 1,135 hectares in Jamalpur sadar, 560 hectares in Sarishabari, 920 hectares in Melandaha, 1,475 hectares in Islampur, 1,400 hectares in Dewanganj, 1,280 hectares in Madarganj and 2,120 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila.
Deputy Director, DAE, Md Rafiqul Islam said timely sowing of seed, using of balance fertilizer which was available in markets, in absence of pest attack, proper nursing and favourable weather made farmers optimistic to get good production of wheat.
