Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up an extensive programme of jute cultivation in the district during the current season.
Official sources said a total of 14,288 hectares of land in seven upazilas of the district would be brought under the programme with a production target of 1,56,594 bales of jute.
Of the total, some 1250 hectares of land would be cultivated in Sadar Upazila, 950 in Sadullapur Upazila, 260 in Palashbari Upazila, 1050 in Gobindaganj Upazila, 4050 in Sundarganj Upazila, 3020 in Saghata Upazila and 3498 in Fulchhari Upazila of the district, the sources said.
To make the jute cultivation a success, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation is selling high quality seeds like O-9897, O-72 and JRO-524 among the farmers through their dealers and three sale centres at Sadar, Gobindaganj and Palashbari upazila headquarters, the sources said.
Besides, the department of jute under the Ministry of Jute and Textile also distributed 7,840 kgs of high quality jute seeds to 7,000 farmers in the district last month, said M. Majedul Islam, Sadar Upazila Jute Development Officer.
The DAE has also taken up necessary measures for giving training to jute growers, distribution of fertilizers, pesticides and other agri-inputs at fair prices.
Deputy director of DAE M. Aminul Islam said the farmers of the district showed their keen interest in cultivating jute this year as they got good prices of the crop last year.
