Bangladesh’s exports to India through Benapole Port rose 52 per cent year-on-year to 451,395 tonnes in 2021-22 fiscal year.
The port’s effort to keep trading on even amid pandemic in the last fiscal year has helped log the export growth, said Abdul Jalil, deputy director for administration of the Benapole Port.
Even 10 years ago, the connecting channel between the two neighbouring nations was used only for imports, according to port officials.
Now exports through Benapole is increasing thanks to a rise in the quality of Bangladeshi goods, they added.
Many products which were earlier imported from India has made a place in Bangladesh’s export list, the port users said.
Different kinds of goods are exported to India through Benapole, including jute products, readymade garments, chemicals, acids, paper, raw materials, iron, tissue, melamine, rice bran and mahogany fruit.
Exports to India would have risen to a great extent if Bangladesh could send products through railways, said Shamsur Rahman, president of Benapole C&F Agents’ Association.
Indian products enter Bangladesh through train, but the connected vehicle leaves with empty bogies after unloading the goods, he said.
“Export through train would cut cost, save time and ensure goods’ safety for Bangladeshi businesses,” said Azizur Rahman, commissioner of Benapole customs.
