While huge infections from coronavirus are being detected across the country, the experts express their anxiety at the insufficient measures taken by the government. Health experts said, there are more measures including collection of adequate equipment and stern action by law enforcers to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
Experts said there are no sufficient equipment in the hospitals yet. They also said the personal protective equipment (PPE) and the ventilator, oxygen and other logistic supports are short in the country’s health department.
“The PPEs which are provided to our physicians and other health workers are not proper ones. PPEs have to be a total body covering cloth. But which ones have been supplied to our doctors and nurses so far are not total covering cloth. It has no goggles, no masks and the dress which is not properly protective,” Professor Dr. Muzaherul Huq, former Regional Advisor of World Health Organisation (WHO) told The New Nation.
These PPEs have not any shoes covering parts which is very much important to protect from the virus infections. The veteran expert also said that there are lack of ventilators, oxygen plants also. “In this situation in the densely populated country, there should have more than 5000 ventilators in Bangladesh. But there are less than 1000 ventilators in hospitals across the country,” Professor Dr. Muzaherul Huq said.
He said also that major hospitals need to be equipped with oxygen plants, but it is not
there.
Dr. Muzaherul Huq said that the six Covid-19 treatment hospitals including Kurmitola General Hospital and Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital are not well equipped. Professor Huq said a good number of respiratory medicine doctors are needed for those hospitals. Specialists for kidney diseases, cardiac and diabetes are also needed to render proper treatment for the Covid-19 patients, because many of them are found suffering from those types of diseases.
He also said that more ICU beds are also required across the country in this situations. The veteran expert said, doctors, nurses and pathological technicians have to impart stress management trainings so that they can serve the nation with their best to combat with the virus.
Dr. Huq also pointed out that there are lack of quality and quantity of nurses which is very important in this moment. “More trained nurses, are very important in this moment, who are well trained to maintain ICU with its equipment handling,” the Professor said.
Besides, experts also suggested more stern actions to make the ongoing lockdown success.
When contacted Professor Dr. ABM Abdullah, the personal physician of the Prime Minister told The New Nation, “People are not obeying lockdown properly in most areas in Dhaka which is liable for the outbreak of the virus now.”
He said the government have to take more stern action to maintain the lockdown strictly to contain the spread of the virus in Bangladesh. If necessary, he suggested, the law enforcers have to take stern action to compel those people to stay home who are violating lockdown frequently.
Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Friday said that some criticism heard about shortages of ICU and other facilities to combat with coronavirus.
The minister said that it had be late to start PPE due to lack of its raw materials and closed of its international markets. “But now we are collecting and distributing one lakh pieces of PPE everyday,” the Minister said while addressing an online press briefing in Dhaka.
He said that there are shortages of ICU in the country comparing with European countries but it is increasing day by day.
He said the facilities to treat Covid-19 patients is increasing across the country.
Meanwhile Professor Dr. Meerjadi Sabrina Flora, the Director of IEDCR said in the briefing that most of the Covid-19 patients need not take to hospitals for treatment. “Most of the coronavirus patients have to stay home as peer the World Health Organisation (WHO) directives,” Dr. Sabrina said.
