Experts recommend intensified anti-drug collaboration

Experts at a view-sharing meeting here on Tuesday suggested Bangladesh’s intensified cooperation with two neighbours as they identified trend of growing social crimes and debacles as major consequences of drug abuse in the country.
“More effective engagement of Bangladesh is needed with neighbouring India and Myanmar to stop influx of drugs,” additional director of Department and Narcotics Control (DNC) Mujibur Rahman Patwary told the meeting as part of DNC’s month-long nationwide anti-drug campaign.
He added drug dealers should be the focus of attention of the law enforcement campaign while the community level interventions were needed to build a drug-free society to protect people particularly the young generation from deadly aggression of drugs.
More than 600 members of Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) from various educational institutions in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions joined the meeting in the conference hall of Bangladesh Postal Academy.
Commander of BNCC’s Mohasthan Regiment Lt Col KM Imam Ahsan addressed the meeting as the chief guest while 5 Mohasthan Battalion Commander (BTFO) Major Mohsin Ali, PUO Dr Nur Salam Khatun and TUO Mustafizur Rahman spoke as special guests.
Rahman Patwary said social or family maladjustments, rising crimes, health hazards, murders and suicides are the major consequences of abusing of drugs like heroin, phensidyl, hemp, pathedrine and tranquilizers.
He said the law enforcement agencies alone are not capable of to combating the social disease but community participation coupled with family and social contribution was very important to this end.
The meeting was informed that 80 percent of the drug addicts belong to the age group of 15 to 30 in the country.
Col Imam Ahsan said the present government is pledged bound to free the society from drugs addiction and urged all the attending guardians, parents and others concerned to supplement the government endeavor for welfare of the nation.
Chapainawabganj Correspondent adds: Anti-drug campaign and human chain, Procession and discussion meeting was held in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday. Balugram Adarsha College in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Tuesday arranged an anti-drug guardians gathering and opinion exchanging meeting at Principal Belal Uddin auditorium of the college. The meeting was held with the principal of the college Md. Matiur Rahman in the chair and was addressed among others by vice principal NSM Mahbubur Rahman, guardians Md. Aminul Islam and Md. Hasan Ali and teachers AKM Rezaul Karim, Mokhleshur Rahman, Azad Ali and Rokeya Khatun. The speakers asked the guardians to come forward to save the young generation from Narcotics.
On the other hand, District Narcotics Control Department of Chapainawabganj arranged an anti-drug human chain, procession and discussion meeting at Nawabganj High School auditorium on Tuesday noon. The meeting was held with the head teacher Md. Hasinur Rahman in the chair and was addressed among others by the president of the managing committee of the school Md. Golam Mostafa, Inspector of District Narcotics Control Department Md. Ilias Hossain Talukdar. Before the meeting a human chain was held on school premises and the procession paraed the main roads of the town. The program was organized as mark of the anti-drug campaign month January 2017.
