Angry and hungry people are defying the lockdown in large numbers protesting the miserable conditions they are in. What they are demanding most reasonably is that they must have the daily necessities of life to survive while lockdown or they must be given their jobs to earn. They cannot be asked to die with children unfed and untreated. Unless the government can show its competence the street protests in cities are sure to grow in number compounding the crisis of the pandemic.
The garment workers in thousands are also in the streets clamouring to join their jobs. The government decision to allow some garment factories to reopen with limited workers has created more problems. Nothing has been said about the fate of others. The jobless are to be looked after by the government. But there is no such assurance. Such crowding will cost more lives being contaminated.
Soon many others will come out to join protesters in the streets finding their conditions desperate.
Many doctors, nurses and police who were in frontline of the fight against corona pandemic have lost their lives for the reason they could not be provided with protective gears. So far it is known 500 doctors, 200 nurses and around 400 policemen had infected with the terrible disease helplessly. Their bravery is to be admired but the authorities who have neglected to procure the elementary supplies subverted their efforts to help the people against extremely contagious and fast moving disease.
So the doctors, health workers and police cannot be blamed if they remain far away when their safety is not a matter of concern. They cannot be helpful as dead. When they are helpless the people are also helpless to save their lives.
A large part of relief materials provided by the government is stolen by government officials and local representatives. The Washington Post called this pandemic of corruption in Bangladesh.
We are not talking of beggars help in the streets. Help equally every rich and poor household because they are locked in and have no income. In many countries including the USA food is supplied free on telephone, if not already supplied.
We are all being seen as inhuman and utterly incompetent for our lack of conscious assertion about what the government must do for facing life and death from corona pandemic. It is accepted by any responsible government that at a time of crisis the government is the insurance of the last resort.
Here in our country the people are not even sure where to go for medical help. As the hospitals are not equipped, the doctors are most reluctant to admit them knowing that there is no preparedness for intensive care the patients need. The health system remained neglected year after year. Even now there is no urgency to prepare the system for the serious task of saving lives.
The WHO is attaching maximum importance to the need of testing and tracing for containing the spread of coronavirus. Without knowing the number of affected persons, confining only the unaffected people will not be of much help in dealing with the problem of spreading the disease. Health authorities are examining the testing kits in a leisurely manner. This way the lockdown policy is falling apart.
Our experts and specialist must send forceful message to the government to do what must be done. Our image as a nation of opportunists and cowards is not the right kind of image we deserve. Think of the praise the British National Health Service people have earned through the dedicated work for the corona patients.
