All private universities are increasing admission, tuition and other fees every year whimsically without mentioning any logical reasons behind the enhancement creating discontent among the students and guardians.
Not only the increase of these fees, the authorities of private universities also charge high rates for giving transcripts, certificates and testimonials, University Grants Commission (UGC) sources said.
They said, “There are no similarities among the universities over charging admission and tuition fees from the students. There are also many differences over giving salaries to the teachers.”
The commission suggests that the admission, tuition fees and other fees should be at a tolerable level so that the entry of all classes’ students is easy in private universities for higher education.
“The higher education should be open for all classes of students. Higher education in private universities should be available for the meritorious and poor students,” it said.
UGC officials said, most of the private universities are ignoring ‘income and expenditure policy’ of the Private University Act-2010, as they did not preserve the income and expenditure in 2015. The universities also did not submit any report to the commission in this regard.
Kamrul Hasan, a guardian, said, “My son is studying at a private university located in the city’s Baridhara area. The tuition fees have been increased almost double compare to the last year. We can’t ask but to pay. We are helpless.”
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan told The New Nation that the commission has received many complaints from the students and their guardians over charging high rate of tuition fees in private universities.
“Many private universities are increasing all kind of fees without informing the UGC,” he said.
The UGC chairman said, “No university has the right to increase fees without informing UGC. But no varsity follows the rules of the UGC. We are observing the matter. Stern action would be taken against them if they increase fees whimsically.”
The UGC officials found that a good number of private universities take fees from the students which sometimes is almost higher than the world standard universities.
An official wishing anonymity told this reporter that the authorities of private universities never inform the students before enhancing fees. Even they threat the students to expel from the university if any one protests.
The officials said that the UGC would form a committee to check the complaints of increase of all kind of fees, especially admission and tuition fees.
