Existing system of higher edn to be changed: Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday said, the government wants to change the existing system of higher education with a view to building the students international standard so that they can compete with the world people.
 “We have a plan to enrich the higher education. Certificate distribution or reception should not be the motto of the higher education. So, the existing system of the education must be changed,” Nurul Islam Nahid said.
The minister said this while speaking at the convocation of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on Monday.
Chairman of University Grants Commission Professor Abdul Mannan, Member of Trustee Board of ULAB Kazi Nabil Ahmed MP, Emeritus Professor of ULAB Rafiqul Islam and its Vice-Chancellor Professor HM Zahirul Hoque addressed at the function, among others.
The education minister said, the government will support those universities who started their institutions for the sake of the building skilled
graduates. But it will never co-operate them who have been doing business in the name of the higher education.
He also emphasised on shifting to the permanent campus by the deadline of the ministry. Otherwise, the ministry will be compelled to shut the universities running academic activities in temporary buildings.
The minister said, technical education is needed to develop a society and it is equally important to sustain in the post-modern world.
 “We have targeted that 20 percent of the total students will study in technical education by 2021. In the meantime, 14 percent of the students have already studying in the technical courses,” Nahid said.
He said that the education ministry has been working to ensure quality education at all levels in the country. That is why the ministry provides free textbooks to the students all over the country.
