BSS, Dhaka :
Awami League presidium member and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the killers of innocent children and the attackers of the pregnant woman would not be spared as the government has already taken stringent measures in this connection.
“Criminals irrespective of political opinions and whoever they might be and whatever influential they are, have to face punishment,” he said.
Obaidul Quader said this on Wednesday while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion
organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at the Jatiya Press Club demanding exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the August 21 grenade attack of 2004 and paying homage to those killed in the carnage.
Jote president and film hero Faruque chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by Jote general secretary and drama personality Falguni Hamid, Dhaka City Awami League vice-president Faezuddin Miah, film heroine Dilara Yasmin, actor Danny Sidak and assistant secretary of Awami League sub-committee MA Karim.
Thanking those individuals who have taken strong stand and staged demonstrations against the killing of children and the attackers of the pregnant woman, Obaidul Quader said, “Minor child Sheikh Russell and a pregnant woman were among those brutally killed on August 15 in 1975 but today’s protestors didn’t raise any protest against that, which was very unfortunate and painful.”
Expressing his anguish, the minister said, “Launching of attacks on the pregnant woman and innocent children were not only inhuman and gruesome but also horrendous and condemnable incidents. But, none raised any protest against the brutal-savage attack launched on Bangabandhu’s family.”
He said, “Although after a long lull the trial in Bangabandhu Killing Case was held and trial in the August 21 grenade attack case would certainly be held if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is alive.”
“The August 21 grenade attack was mounted with an ulterior motive to kill the then opposition leader and now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. For this reason, the overnment led by Sheikh Hasina won’t adopt dilly-dallying tactics with the case,” the senior Awami League leader said.
The minister added that the accused in the August 21 carnage case would be brought back home for trial like the trial of the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu.
