Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations today recalled the 11th anniversary of the grisly August 21 grenade attack on Awami League rally in Dhaka with day-long programmes.
The speakers at discussions paid rich tributes to the memories of those who were killed in the attack and called for proper punishment to the perpetrators.
The speakers said genocide in 1971, assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu and his family members in 1975 and August 21 grenade attack in 2004 are identical incidents and a vested quarter was the mastermind behind those.
The speakers also said the link of the main opposition BNP to the carnage has already been proved in the supplementary investigation into the incident.
“The arrested members of the militant outfits and intelligence agency revealed the names of BNP high ups and so the opposition leader Khaleda Zia cannot deny her responsibility as the then head of the government” they added.
Chittagong became the city of processions as different socio-cultural and political parties organized several mourning rallies carrying black flags and black badges to pay homage to the victims of August 21.
Chittagong city, north and south district units of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its various front organizations, different socio-cultural organizations, trade unions and professional bodies organized several programmes to observe the black day.
Hoisting black flags, wearing black badges, Khatme Quran, Milad Mahfil, discussions, mourning processions included the day’s programmes.
Chittagong city AL organized a discussion meeting at Zilla Parishad Auditorium Hall with its president and former city mayor A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury in the chair.
Vice- Chancellor of Chittagong University Dr Iftakher Uddin Ahmed, Chittagong city AL general secretary (GS) and city Mayor AZM Nasir Uddin, AL leaders, advocate Iftker Saimul Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the discussion.
Chittagong north and south district chapters of AL have observed the day at upazila and union levels that included discussion meetings and Milad mahfils.
Bangladesh Awami Juba League and Sechhasebak League brought out a big mourning procession from new market area which paraded through important thoroughfares.
Doa, Milad Mahfil and special prayers were also held at different mosques and other places of worships in the city seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of those who killed in August 21 grenade attack.
Chittagong south district AL held a discussion this morning at its Andarkilla office with its president Muslem Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
Chittagong north district AL brought out a mourning procession led by its President Nurul Alam Chowdhurya and GS MA Slalam from its Dost Building office premises.
The procession concluded at the same venue after parading through city streets.
Chittagong city and district Awami Jubo League and Chhatra League observed the day holding discussions and bringing out mourning processions.
Another reports adds: Minister for Housing and Public works and member of Awami League Presidium Engr. Mosharaf Hossain demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers of August 21 grenade attack .
He said if the real culprits are not brought under law with exemplary punishment, the politics of killings and conspiracy will not be ended. He disclosed it while addressing the rally as arranged by North district Awamileague at Dost building square in city on Friday evening as chief guest.
The minister in his brief deliverations said a vested quarters tried to turn the country into a taleban style govt through launching grenade attack on AL leaders. President of north district unit of AL, Nurul Alam Chowdhury presided over it. General secretary of the unit and Administrator of Zila parishad MA Salam was the principal speaker in it. Organizing secretry of north unit AL and former poura mayor Debasish Palit conducted the rally duly addressed by Dr. Sheikh Safiul Alam, Abul kasem Chisti, Mohiuddin Bablu, Kamrul Islam chowdhury etc .
Meanwhile City jubo league unit held a discussion meeting in memory of the demises in the grenade attack at Zila parishad hall with JL convenor Delwar Hossain in the chair. Presidium member of Jubo league central committee Syed Mahmudul hoque graced the occasion as chief guest. Among others city JL joint convenor Farid mahmud, jt. Convenor Didarul Alam, moderator of the memorial meeting Mahbubul Hoque Sumon spoke on the occasion.
