The Feni special tribunal which delivered the verdict in madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s murder case on Thursday, reprimanded former Officer in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain for his negligence in handling the case.
The District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mamunur Rashid said this in his observation while delivering the verdict of the sensational murder case.
“The former OC was negligent in the incident. Everyone should be alert to avert recurrence of such incident,” said the judge.
The former OC is accused of unlawfully interrogating madrasa student Nusrat and
recording it on his mobile phone. A video of the incident went viral on the social media, prompting a lawyer to file a case against the policeman on April 15 under the Digital Security Act. Moazzem had summoned Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s Principal Siraj Ud Doula and Nusrat, who accused the teacher of sexually harassing her. The girl’s mother had filed a case with Sonagazi police over her daughter’s harassment.
The former OC interrogated Nusrat in absence of her lawyer or any other woman and used inappropriate language.
Earlier, the District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Mamunur Rashid sentenced all 16 accused, including principal SM Sirajuddoula, in the case. Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 18, an Aleem examinee from Sonagazi Fazil Madrasa, was set on fire by some fellows in the morning of April 6 as she refused to withdraw a case filed against madrasa Principal Siraj Ud Doula, for sexual harassment. She succumbed to her injuries at the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on the night of April 10.
