A former Jatiya Party lawmaker’s son reportedly committed suicide by jumping off the balcony of his 8th floor apartment in Kathalbagan area of the capital on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Barrister Asif Imtiaz Khan Jisad, 33, son of Advocate Shahidul Islam Khan who was a Jatiya Party lawmaker from Sirajganj-5 constituency during 1986-90 period.
Simon Shahid Nishad, Asif’s brother-in-law, said Asif married his elder sister Sabrina Shahid Nishita four years ago. However, Asif’s family did not accept the marriage and he has been staying at his father-in-law’s home in Kathalbagan since then.
He also said that Asif, who has history of drug addiction, often quarreled with his wife Sabrina over family issues.
“On Thursday night, the couple locked into another argument and at one point, Asif jumped over the railing of the balcony,” he added.
Meanwhile, Asif’s father Shahidul Islam said his son was a lawyer of the Supreme Court and also a legal adviser to Desh Trading Corporation in Motijheel.
Alleging that Asif did not commit suicide, Shahidul Islam said he was murdered.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said Asif was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead by the duty doctor shortly after arrival.
The body was kept at the morgue for autopsy, he added.
