Attack on Hasina's convoy: Ex-MP, 49 BNP men indicted

A Satkhira court framed charges against a former BNP MP and 49 leaders and activists of the party in a case
filed in connection with the attack on the convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina on Satkhira-Jessore road in Kolaroa upazila in 2002.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Saha framed charges against them on Monday and fixed June 28 for starting the trial.
Earlier on May 18, Sheikh Shafiqur Rahman, Inspector (investigation) of Kolaroa Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on May 18.
Former local MP Habibul Islam Habib was among the charge sheeted accused.
On August 30 in 2002, the convoy of Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader, came under attack allegedly by BNP leaders and activists on Satkhira-Jessore road in Kolaroa upazila while she was visiting the district to console a raped housewife on August 30, 2002.
The attackers fired gunshots to kill Hasina, but she survived the assassination attempt while others accompanying her sustained injuries. Several journalists were also assaulted during the incident.
Failing to lodge a case with the local police station, freedom fighter commander and Awami League leader Moslem Uddin filed a case with a Satkhira magistrate’s court against 27 BNP men in connection with the gun attack.
The case was dismissed after former MP Habibul Islam Habib and several local journalists gave deposition before the court that no incident of attack on the convoy of Sheikh Hasina took place in Satkhira.
