Ex-GCC mayor Mannan gets bail in graft case

The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday upheld a High Court (HC) order that granted bail to suspended Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation M A Mannan in a graft case
filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order dismissing a leave to appeal filed by the ACC against the HC bail order.
Senior Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain took part in the hearing on behalf of Mannan while Advocate Khurshed Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
Mannan’s Lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain said that there was no legal bar for him to get release from jail after the apex court order.
Earlier on August 16 this year, the High Court granted bail to Mannan in this case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Joydevpur Police Station in Gazipur on June 13 this year on charge of committing irregularities in relief and welfare funds of the City Corporation.
According to the case statement, the relief and welfare funds of Tk 1.3 crore and Tk 90.87 lakh were spent in between 2013 and 2015. There were irregularities in spending the money as the Mayor did not maintain any bank accounts. Mannan was shown arrested in this case on June 19.
He was arrested on February 11, 2015 for the first time. Later he was shown arrested in 22 cases. He was released on March 2 this year after getting bail in all of his cases. But instantly he was arrested on April 15 again. Now he is in jail.
