Ex-DUJ leader Abdus Shahid’s role recalled

Journalism in Bangladesh is facing challenge as the journalist have imposed self censorship on themselves fearing the government threats to their freedom of expression as well as security, said a group of journalist leaders at a virtual meeting held on Tuesday.
The meeting and doa programme was organised to recall former Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president and ntv’s news editor Abdus Shahid on his first death anniversary.The programme was chaired by DUJ’s president Kader Gani Chowdhury and moderated by its general secretary Shahidul Islam.
Joining in the meeting, former Jatiya Press Club president Riaz Uddin Ahmed said Abdus Shahid was honest, fearless and brave journalist. His unexpected death made an irreparable loss to our journalism. His presence was badly needed at the crisis moment which our nation is passing, he said.
He said Abdus Shahid proved his professionalism in his job. He never used his profession to achieve any personal gain and never compromised professional ethics.
Mostafa Kamal Majumdar, Editor in charge of The New Nation, praised the leadership of late Abdus Shahid and made mention of his move to reform the union.
He said Abdus Shahid worked for making better environment for journalists.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) President M Abdullah said the death of Abdus Shahid is the matter of shock. The journalist community will never forget his contribution to journalism.
Kader Gani Chowdhury said Abdus Shahid struggled for freedom of speech and democracy in his entire life. His untimely death made us sad, he added.
The programme was also addressed by former President of Jatiya Press Club Shawkat Mahmud, Kamal Uddin Sabuj, BFUJ Secretary General Nurul Amin Rokon, BFUJ former Secretary General MA Aziz, Former President of DUJ Abdul Hai Sikder, General Secretary of Jatiya Press Club Ilias Khan, President of Dhaka Reporters Unity Morsalin Nomani, among others.
