Amassing illegal wealths: Ex-customs official gets 8 -yr jail

A court in Chittagong on Wednesday sentenced a former customs official to eight years of imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing wealth worth Tk 1.94 crore illegally.
The convict was identified as Sheikh Akram Hossain, former Superintendent of Teknaf Customs Excise and VAT Commissionate in Cox’ s Bazar and son of late Ibrahim of the port city’s Agrabad area. The court also asked the district Magistrate to realize the amount, Tk 1.94 crore, by selling his assets and submit those to the state treasury.
Advocate Mahmudul Haque Mahmud, an ACC Public Prosecutor, said Deputy Director of Chittagong-2 ACC Syed Iqbal Hossain filed the case against Sheikh Akram Hossain with Double Mooring Police Station on October 16, 2011 for amassing the wealth beyond known sources.
On July 24 in 2013, another ACC Deputy Director Azizul Haque submitted charge-sheet against him. The court then framed charges against him on May 7, 2014.
