UNB, Chittagong :A court here on Tuesday granted ad-interim bail to former Chittagong City Corporation mayor and Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a corruption case in which a warrant for his arrest was issued on Monday.Judge SM Ataur Rahman of the Divisional Special Judge Court granted the bail to Mohiuddin Chowdhury, also Chittagong City Awami League president till the next hearing on February 16 upon a petition when he appeared before the court around 10:30 am. Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Babul stood for Mohiuddin Chowdhury. On Monday, the court issued arrest warrant against Mohiuddin as he did not appear before the court on the day fixed for recording deposition of the witnesses in the case filed against him by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing wealth illegally. Court sources said, the ACC filed the case against the former Chittagong city mayor on December 2, 2007 during the army-backed caretaker government for accumulating wealth worth Tk 123,491 beyond known sources of income and concealing information about his assets to the tune of Tk 2,829,264.The court framed charges against him on February 5, 2009. After the deposition of nine witnesses in the case, the High Court later stayed the case proceedings following a petition filed by Mohiuddin Chowdhury.However, the HC withdrew the stay order on November 27 last year and directed the lower court to continue the trial. Later, the court fixed January 27 for recording deposition of other witnesses.Meanwhile, four witnesses testified before the court on Monday. After their deposition, the court fixed February 16 for recording the statements of other witnesses.
