Former Chief Justice Latifur Rahman is no more. On Tuesday morning at 6.30 am, he breathed his last in the city’s Samorita Hospital. He was 81. Latifur Rahman, also the Chief Advisor of a Caretaker Government, was admitted there 10 days ago after he suffered a stroke, the hospital’s General Manager Nurul Islam Tuhin told newsmen.
He was buried at Banani graveyard in the afternoon of the same day. His Namaj-e-Janaza was held on the Supreme Court premises attended by former and incumbent judges of the Supreme Court, lawyers, dignitaries, elite and ministers.
Among others, four former Chief Justices namely Justice Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury, Justice KM Hasan, Justice Syed JR Mudassir Hussain and Justice M Mozammel Hossain, former Chief Election Commissioner Abdur Rouf, Chairman of the Press Council Justice Momtaj Uddin Ahmed, former Adviser of the Caretaker Government Barrister Mainul Hosein, former Minister Abdul Matin Khashru, Bar Council’s Vice Chairman Abdul Baset Majumder, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Supreme Court Bar Association President Joynul Abedin. Barrister M Amirul Islam and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the janaza.
Latifur Rahman served as the Chief Justice for 14 months from January 2000. Then he was appointed Chief Advisor to the caretaker government during the general election in 2001. After completing his Masters in English from the Dhaka University in 1956, he studied law at the same university. He began to practise law in 1960. He was an apprentice to Bangladesh’s first Attorney General MH Khandaker.
He was appointed High Court judge in 1979. Justice Latifur Rahman retired as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh on Febuary 28, 2001. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
