East West University (EWU) arranged a seminar on anti-smoking awareness titled “Smoking Kills” at its campus in Aftabnagar in the city on Sunday. Prof Dr Pran Gopal Datta, former Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University was the Chief Guest and delivered the Keynote address.
Dr Pran Gopal laid out the danger of Tobacco and how it is a major health concern for the country. He stressed the need for public and private initiatives to raise anti-smoking awareness among the people. He blamed the cigarette companies for targeting the youth through attractive marketing techniques. He believed that only active social awareness can reduce the smoking practices among the youth. Dr Datta urged to the students to take the initiative to curb smoking among their friends and relatives. He also answered some interesting questions raised from the audience. Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, Board of Trustees, East West University and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Chaired the seminar while Profr Dr MM Shahidul Hassan, VC of EWU was the special guest. Pro-VC Prof Dr M Sekander Hayat Khan, Deans, faculty members, students and university staffs were also present in the seminar.
