BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the party is going to take part in the upcoming city corporation election despite slim hopes of the fairness.
He said, “The use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the upcoming two Dhaka City Corporation election will not help reflect the mandate of the electorate. There is a slim chance of the election being fair.
The BNP leader said it while speaking to the media after placing wreaths at party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of Dhaka city together with the newly-elected committee members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “We have clearly said, no election under the current Election Commission and the government can be free and fair, and people’s mandate won’t be reflected in the polls. Yet the BNP is taking part in it because of our commitment to the democracy.”
He said, “Election Commission says that the election will be held using the EVMs, though it’s completely a faulty system.”
“We turn down it as we think people’s verdict won’t be reflected if the EVMs are used.”
He also said, there is little probability of credible election in the two city corporations.
Claiming that no election is possible without the Caretaker Government, he said that the decision of people will not be reflected if the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is used.
The BNP leader hoped that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia could be freed from jail through a strong movement in the New Year.
“Chhatra Dal took a vow that they would restore democracy and ensure the release of our Chairperson through a strong movement and unity of students and people,” he said.
BNP Secretary greeted the members of the Christian community on the occasion of Christmas. “We expect creation of a beautiful and peaceful environment with the teachings of the Jesus Christ.”
BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Aman Ullah Aman, party Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and other leaders of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, were also present there.
The Election Commission (EC) has set January 30 for the election of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
