The government is implementing a project to ensure modern civic facilities for the country’s non-municipal upazila headquarters, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said.
The work of Taka 1380 crore ‘upazila towns (non-municipal) master plan formulation and basic infrastructure development’ project is on to improve the living standard and infrastructural development of 183 non-municipal upazilas, he added.
If implemented, the project will help every upazila town to deliver facilities almost same to other cities,” the minister said this on the thirteenth instant while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural session of “Efficient and Accountable Local Government Project Programme” organized by the Local Government Division at the Public Health Engineering Department (DPHE) auditorium in the city.
He said considering the importance of local government in a democratic state system, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has created opportunities for local government bodies to play policy-making and supervisory roles through decentralization.

Local Government Divisional Senior Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, UNDP Country Director to Bangladesh Sudipto Mukerjee, Swiss Embassy Deputy Mission Head to Bangladesh Beate EIsaesser and senior officials of concerned ministries attended the programme.
