The military has described Sohagi Jahan Tonu as ‘a child’ of the Bangladesh Army and promised all help in catching her killers, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said.Army personnel are deeply saddened by the incident, it added in a media statement. The 19-year-old undergraduate was ‘raped’ and murdered inside the Comilla Cantonment on Mar 20 but no arrests have yet been yet. Ganajagaran Mancha Spokesperson Imran H Sarkar recently speculated that someone ‘important’ might be involved in the crime. Soon afterwards, the ISPR on Tuesday issued a press release saying: “Tonu’s Father Md Yaar Hossain has been a civilian staff of the Comilla Cantonment Board for the past 30 years. He is a member of the army family and Tonu was brought up in Comilla Cantonment. She is a child of ours.”It said “every member of the army is extremely sad” over the incident.Saying the army was ‘part of the general people’, the ISPR said, “The army too wants that the culprits be put in the dock through a speedy investigation.” It promised full cooperation in the probe. The ISPR release, however, said some people were trying to sow ‘confusions’, although an investigation was already on. It said the “patriotic army” had been giving all help to the investigators right from the start.”But some vested quarters,” it said, “are making and publicising speculative comments…and trying to spread confusion among the people, which is not at all acceptable.”The ISPR said the army expected people to express and publish ‘responsible’ views on the tragic incident.
