UNB, Dhaka :
The European Union (EU) has requested Bangladesh to bring back 80,000 irregular Bangladesh nationals, now living in the European countries while Bangladesh wants their regularisation, if there is any scope.
A visiting EU delegation, led by Christian Leffler, Deputy Secretary General for Global and Economic issues of the European External Action Service (EEAS), made the request during their meeting with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at the latter’s Secretariat office on Monday.
The delegation also met Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam BSc and discussed the migration related issues.
Bangladesh has sought the list of the irregular Bangladesh nationals for further scrutiny to know their actual status.
The Home Minister at the meeting sought the EU help to regularise Bangladesh nationals there saying they are contributing to both Bangladesh and EU economies.
He also sought EU support to send back Rohingya people and other refugees from Bangladesh.
While talking to reporters after the meeting, the Home
Minister also said it is a lengthy process if the 80,000 Bangladesh nationals need to be brought back home.
Some of the Bangladesh nationals turn irregular their due to the expiry of their visas and not necessarily all went there illegally, the minister explained.
Khan also said, Bangladesh nationals are not involved in any criminal activity there rather they are contributing to their economies.
Meanwhile, the first-ever dialogue on migration between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) will be held in the city this morning to discuss ‘all the aspects of migration management’.
Earlier, a six-member delegation of the EU, led by Christian Leffler arrived here on Monday morning to attend the dialogue, said a senior official at the Foreign Ministry.
