BSS, Dhaka :
The European Union (EU) mission in Dhaka will support Bangladesh’s export diversification efforts especially in its ship-building, medicine and information technology sectors.
Newly appointed EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon said this when he called on Foreign Minister AH Mahmud Ali at the latter’s office here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, they discussed various issues including the EU’s support to the development initiatives of Bangladesh, a foreign ministry press release said here today.
Referring to EU’s development programme for Bangladesh for the next seven years, the envoy informed the minister that the EU’s assistance to the country’s development projects have been raised 70 percent compared to the past.
He said this programme which will highlight education and capacity building, nutrition and health sector and building the democratic institutions is similar to the government’s vision 2021 and its six-month long national development plan.
Apart from this, he informed the minister that the EU is eager to further strengthen mutual cooperation on climate change, bio-safety and human security sectors. “The EU’s efforts would immensely help turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021,” he added.
In reply, the minister thanked the EU for its contribution to Bangladesh’s development and hoped that the EU’s contribution to this end would continue in future.
About the statement issued by EU immediately after the verdict of a war criminal, the minister said the EU has its stance about the death penalty across the world. But, it (EU) should not issue such statement immediately after a verdict of a war criminal by the International Crimes Tribunal, he added.
The foreign minister hoped that the EU will express its opinion in future so that their support to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to hold the trial of war criminals is clearly projected in light with the EU parliament resolution.
“Such type of their statement/opinion can create misconception among the people about the verdict of International Crimes Tribunal,” he added.
Expressing similar sentiment to this end, the EU envoy referred to the EU parliament resolution and said that the EU supports the trial process of war criminals in Bangladesh, the press release said.
