European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Rensje Teerink has said the EU stands shoulder to shoulder with the government of Bangladesh in reintegrating migrants back in their community.
She made the assurance recently while visiting Khulna to see the activities and impact of Prottasha project.
“I’m very impressed with the work being done under Prottasha project. I take this opportunity to reassure that the EU stands shoulder to shoulder with
the government of Bangladesh in reintegrating migrants back in their community,” she was quoted as saying in an IOM media release issued on Sunday.
The EU Head of Delegation, Rensje Teerink, accompanied by Chief of Mission of IOM Bangladesh Giorgi Gigauri, Deputy Chief of Mission Dimanche Sharon and Acting Executive Director of BRAC Asif Saleh visited the project area of Prottasha in Khulna and Dumuria upazilas from July 17 to 19.
The EU is funding the four-year Prottasha project which is being implemented in 10 districts since 2017 aimed at the sustainable reintegration of returnees and the progressive achievement of SDG Goal 10.7 –to facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people.
International Organization for Migration (IOM) in close collaboration of the Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry and partnership with Brac has been implementing the project having three components-reintegration, governance and awareness raising.
During the visit to Dumuria upazila, EU delegates interacted with the beneficiaries, para-counselors and migration forum members at the project locations.
On the second day of the visit on 18 July, EU delegates attended a District Coordination Committee (DCC) meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office and visited a Reintegration Service Centre -RSC in Khulna city.
Chief of Mission of IOM Bangladesh Giorgi Gigauri said they are taking a broader developmental approach when it comes to reintegration support to returnee migrants.
