EU Business Council to be formed for boosting trade: Tofail

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said the European Union (EU) has expressed interest to import drug, ship and ICT products from Bangladesh along with readymade garments.
“To boost trade and cooperation, European Union Business Council (EUBC) would be formed comprising the Ambassadors of the EU countries in Bangladesh and leaders of concerned trade bodies, which would also help wipe-out the barriers towards expansion of trade,” he added.
The minister told reporters after a courtesy call made by the newly appointed EU Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon at the secretariat here.
Terming EU as a trusted friend of Bangladesh, Tofail said: “More than half of our total export volume goes to EU market, which is expected to be increased in future and the EU has assured us to provide all kinds of cooperation to this end.”
The minister said the EU is keen to strengthen trade and economic activities as well as share experiences with Bangladesh.
On the other hand, the EU has welcomed the Bangladesh’s initiative to diversify export basket and create new market for export in line with the Sixth Five Year Plan, added Tofail.
He said the EU told him that it believes RMG export of Bangladesh would be increased in future.
A T M Murtaza Reza Chowdhury, acting commerce secretary, Amitabh Chakrabarty, additional secretary and director general of WTO Cell, M Shawkat Ali Warechhi, additional secretary (export) and Manoj Kumar Roy, additional secretary (FTA), among others, were present during the meeting.
