Court Correspondent :
The Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday (Thursday) turned down the bail plea of Ekushey Television (ETV) Chairman Abdus Salam and asked police to interrogate him at the jail gate on five working days in the case filed against him for violating the Pornography Control Act.
Magistrate Meher Nigar Suchana passed the order when the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Shah M Akteruzzaman Ilias produced Salam to her court on Thursday morning.
On January 6, the same court sent Salam to jail and fixed Thursday for hearing on his bail petition and a seven-day remand plea sought by the IO.
Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the ETV Chairman in front of its office in the city’s Karwan Bazar area when he was returning home early Tuesday. Later he was shown arrested in the case filed with Dhaka Cantonment Police Station.
“I think, the chairman has been detained because we aired BNP Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman’s programme live from London”, ETV Chief Facilities Officer Sayeed Munna told newsmen early Tuesday.
Duty Officer of the police station Khorshed Alam then said the case was filed by a woman named Kaniz Fatema on November 26 on the charge of airing her obscene images.
