ETV Chairman sent to jail

Court Correspondent :The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka sent Ekushey Television (ETV) Limited Chairman Abdus Salam to jail yesterday afternoon fixing January 8 for hearing on his bail pleas and remand petition of the prosecution in a case. Magistrate Meher Nigar of the CMM Court passed the order, after Sub-Inspector Benzir Ahmed and also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case produced Abdus Salam to her court with a seven-day remand prayer. The court fixed the date for hearing due to lack of required papers.Sources said that, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Salam from his Karwan Bazar office in city around 3:30am. Later he was shown arrested in a case filed with Cantonment Police Station.ETV chief facilities officer Sayeed Munna said that a group of plainclothes DB nabbed Salam around 3:30 am on Tuesday. “I think the chairman was detained because we aired BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tareque Rahman’s programme from London live”, he added.It was a party meeting held in an auditorium in London, UK where Tareque Rahman said that the party activists would leave the streets when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would resign. Calling on BNP activists to continue agitations, he said that they should not let anyone confuse people. Activists should not leave the streets before making agitations successful, said the BNP leader. The meeting was organized by the UK unit of the BNP. Meanwhile, police sources said Salam was shown arrested in a case filed with Dhaka Cantonment Police Station under the ‘Pornography Act’. Duty Officer of the police station Khorshed Alam said the case was filed by a woman named Kaniz Fatema on November 26 on the charge of airing obscene images.
