Speakers at a seminar emphasised on establishing regional connectivity mainly among Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan to boost trade.
They said regarding the connectivity, waterways are can play a vital role to increase business activities among the next door neighbours.
India Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IBCCI) organized the seminar on “Enhancing Indo-Bangla Waterways Connectivity” in the city on Wednesday.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed was present as chief guest at the programme. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, High Commissioner of India to Dhaka, Taskin Ahmed, President, Dewan Sultan Ahmed, Vice President, Jahangir Bin Alam, Secretary and CEO of IBCCI, Tariq Ahmed, former Bangladesh High Commission to India and advisor of World Bank, Delhi Office, Ranjit Barthakur, Chairman, North-East Council, FICCI, India, Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Cargo Vessel Owners Association and Professor Syed Munir Khasru were present at the seminar.
“Rregional trade will increase if the communication system among in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan implemented,” Tofail Ahmed said.
“Communication system is very important for the growth of trade. For this if water transport system established with India and Bangladesh, the two countries would be able to increase trade and communication,” he said.
The commerce ministers also said, “India is one of the most important trade and development partner of Bangladesh. So duty and quota free market access on all products provided to reduce the trade gap between the two countries, except alcohol and tobacco.”
“Bangladesh and India signed a bilateral trade agreement in 1972 and it is automatically renewed every five years.”
