With the departure of winter season prices of all essential commodities, particularly vegetables have shot up in the markets of Bagerhat district town and its all the nine upazilas, causing great sufferings to the people in general and the poor and middle people class in particular.
At present Karolla/Usche is now being sold at Tk.50 to Tk.55.00 per kg as against of Tk.35.00 to Tk.40.00 to according to qualities. Okra is selling here at Tk.40.00 or more as against of Tk30 to Tk.35.00 per kg. Patol is at Tk60.00 per kg, Kusi at Tk40.00, Data at Tk.20.00 as against of Tk.15.00, Jhinga at Tk50.00, papa at Tk.30.00, pumpkin at Tk.30.00 as against of Tk.25.00 per kg, cucumber at Tk.40.00 per kg.
Newly harvested local and imported Indian onion, a must item of Bengali kitchen, flooded the market. But its price has not yet come down to its normal position. Indian onion is selling here at Tk.28.00 to Tk 30.00 per kg while the locally produced onion is selling at Tk.32.00 Tk.36.00 per kg.
Prices of all kinds of rice are still high. Coarse rice is selling here at tk.30.00 to Tk.50.00 per kg according to qualities while the fine quality rice is selling at Tk.68.00 to Tk.70.00 per kg.
. Supply of all kinds of fish has fallen short in the local markets and consequently, their prices have shot up. Magur and Sing is now being sold here at Tk 700.00 to Tk.1, 000.00 per kg according to the sizes. Kai fish produced in farms are selling at Tk.150.00 and above according to sizes. Price of local and sea fish like Koral locally known as Patari, hilsa, Tengra, Bhol, Tero Bhangal, Tafassi, Ruhit, Katla etc. increased. Patari is a popular fish in the district is now being sold in the local market at Tk.400.00 to Tk.1, 000.00 per kg according sizes. Hilsa available in the local markets is below standard sized. It is now being sold here at Tk.400.00 to Tk.800. per kg according to sizes.
Supply of poultry birds in the local market has also fallen short. As a result, their price increased. The broiler white chicken is selling here at Tk.130.00 per kg as against of Tk.110.00 while the mother Chicken is selling at Tk.190.00 or more as against of Tk.170.00 per kg. Red mother chicken is selling at Tk.200.00 or more per kg instead of Tk.190.00 and Sonali poultry is selling at Tk 230.00 as against of Tk.200.00. Price of meat and mutton are also high. But the price of eggs is, however, normal. Egg produced in farms is selling at Tk.24.00 per Haly of 4 while the locally produced egg is selling at Tk.32.00 to Tk.40.00 per haly.
Price of milk and products are also high. Milk is selling here at Tk.60.00 and Ghee at Tk.500.00 per kg.
