Just with the beginning of the holy Ramzan, the price of almost all the essential commodities, particularly those commodities which are consumed much during the holy Ramadan has shot up abnormally, causing untold inconveniences to the poor and the middle class people who are observing fasting. The price of onion, an important ingredient for preparing popular Iftari items and a must item for Bengali kitchen has shot up Tk.10 by per kg. Locally produced onion is selling in the district town markets at Tk.40 to 45.00 per kg according to different qualities as against of Tk.30 to 35 before the beginning of the holy Ramadhan while the imported Indian onion is selling here at Tk. 30 to Tk.35 per kg as against of Tk.25.00 to 30.00 previously. Price of gram (unbroken), another important ingredient of popular Iftari items has shot up Tk.10 by per kg. It is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.80 per kg as against of Tk. 70 previously. Price of other Iftari items like fried rice (Muri) and flat rice (Chira) has also increased. Muri is now being sold here at Tk.!00 to 110 or more per kg according to qualities as against of Tk.95 to 100 only a few days ago while Chira is selling here at Tk45 Tk.50 per kg instead of Tk.40.00 to 45.
Price of green papaw has shot up Tk.15.00 by per Kg. The commodity is now selling here at Tk.45.00 per kg as against of Tk.30.00 before the starting of Ramadhan . Price of other vegetables has also shot up is in the local markets. Potato, a popular vegetable of Bengali people is now being sold here at Tk.22.00 per kg as against of Tk.18 previously. Karall is selling here at Tk.50 per kg as against of Tk.35 Patol at 50 as against of Tk.35 , Jhinga at Tk.50 instead of Tk.40 , Kkarolla at Tk.80 per kg, Green banana is selling in the markets at Tk.25.00 to Tk.40 per Haly of four according to sizes and qualities as against of Tk.16 to 30 previously. Egg plant is selling at Tk. 60 to 70 per kg, Kushi at Tk.50 and pumpkin at Tk.35 per kg. Price of ripe banana has shot up abnormally. It is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.20.00 to Tk 40.00 per Haly of four according sizes and qualities as against of Tk.4.00 to 16.00 previously
Price of egg, poultry birds and meat has also increased. Egg produced in farms is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.26 per Haly of four instead of Tk.24 previously. Locally produced egg is selling at Tk 32 to Tk.40 or more per Haly of four according to sizes. Price of broiler poultry birds has also shot up. It is now being sold here at Tk 140 to 150 per kg according to qualities as against of Tk.110 to 120 previously. Mother poultry is now selling here at Tk 220 to 230 or more per kg instead of Tk.150.to Tk 170.00 previously. Beef is selling here at Tk. 475.00 to .480.00 Per kg as against of Tk.450.00 only a few days ago.
Supply of fish in the markets is far below the requirement and consequently, price is high. Small sized hilsa is found abundantly in the local markets. But price is high. It is now being sold here at Tk.500 to 800 per kg according to sizes. Koi fish produced in the farms was so far was chief was also increased. It is now being sold here at Tk.200 to 500. per kg according to sizes instead of Tk.140.00 to 300.00. Prices of milk and milk products are high. But pure and unadulterated milk and milk products are hardly available. Milk is selling in the local markets at Tk 60 per kg while Ghee is selling at Tk.500 per kg or more.
