Essentials become costlier in Sylhet

S A Shofiee, Sylhet :
Prices of vegetables and some other essential commodities have gone up in different kitchen markets in the Sylhet after Eid-ul-Fitr as a result of inadequate supplies.
The heavy rains that have lashed many parts of the country also contributed to the spurt. Retailers blamed the soaring prices of vegetables on a supply shortage. Traders said they could not buy sufficient items from the wholesale markets for sales. Many of them had closed their shops down because of the short supply.
During a visit to the different kitchen markets in the Sylhet, this correspondent found that many of the vegetable shops at Subhanigat Kitchen Market, Bondor, Amborkhana, Kazir Bazar and Station Road were closed.
“The prices of some vegetables remain high after Eid. These have gone beyond the reach of many people,” complained Kabir Ahmed, a government official. The prices of a number of vegetables and commodities went up sharply during Ramadan, when demand usually rises, but the items were still selling at high rates, he added.
Aubergine, which became pricier during Ramadan,
was still selling at Tk 65 to Tk 70 a kilogram. Green pepper was also selling at Tk 120 to Tk 150 per kg.
Cucumber was selling at Tk 45-Tk 50 a kg at a kitchen market in Rampura yesterday. Pumpkin was selling at Tk 25 to Tk 30 a piece, green papaya at Tk 40 per kilogram, snake gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kilogram.
Parble was selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45 and asparagus bin at Tk 50. Ladies’ finger was being sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40 a kg, tomato at Tk 80 to Tk 90 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 60 a kg.
Hossain, a customer at the market, however, said the prices of two essential items-potatoes and onions-were virtually stable.
Islam, a vegetable vendor at Mira Bazar Kitchen Market, said supplies from wholesalers have dropped due to the rains and Eid. As he pointed out, the number of customers in the market, too, was also very low.
