Eskaton double murder Ex-MP’s son Rony gets life-term

Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday handed down Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of former Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan to life-term imprisonment for shooting down two people in a drunken state at Dhaka’s Eskaton on April 14, 2015.
Judge Md Manzurul Imam said that Rony “deserved the death penalty” for his crimes. But he was sentenced to life-term imprisonment (30 years in prison) owing to the “physical and mental state” he had while committing the crime
Rony has also been fined Tk 50,000. In default, he will have to suffer six more months in the prison. The verdict was pronounced in presence of the convict in a crowded courtroom.
The charge sheet of the case says, drunken Rony indiscriminately fired gunshots from inside his black Land Cruiser Prado near the Dilu Road New Eskaton, around 1:45 am on April 14, 2015.
Rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub were both injured in the incident. Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 15 while Yakkub breathed his last hospital on April 23.
Hakim’s mother Monowara Begum filed the murder case against some unidentified people on April 15, 2015 one day after the incident with Ramna Model Police Statlion. Detectives charged Bakhtiar Rony with double murder on July 21, 2015. He was indicted on March 6, 2016.
Rony was allegedly inebriated and lost his patience after being stuck in traffic snarl. Then in a fit of rage, he fired indiscriminately from his pistol at midnight.
