A day after his threat to stage hunger strike, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Sunday sent letters to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, urging them to sit in talks to end the current impasse.
The letter to Khaleda Zia was handed over to her special assistant Shimul Biswas at the BNP chief’s Gulshan office in the city in the evening, while the letter to the PM was also sent to
her Dhanmondi office after sometime, said assistant office secretary of Jatiya Party Abul Hasan.
Abul Hasan also said that he handed over the letters. Awami League office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap received the letter on behalf of the PM. The letters in this regard will also be sent to all other political parties, who are registered with the Election Commission, he added.
HM Ershad in the letters said that the ongoing crisis could be resolved through political dialogue between the two sides. The two chiefs of the two parties should take the initiative of holding talks as soon as early in the interest of the country, he said.
Earlier on Saturday, the Prime Minister’s special envoy threatened to stage a symbolic mass hunger strike in the city on January 27 on the same issue.
HM Ershad in his Sunday’s letters also placed a proposal of holding a national convention with the participation of country’s all political parties. If the Awami League and the BNP agre with the proposal, the convention can be held at any place in the country, he said.
Drawing the attention of the two chiefs of the two major parties, the Jatiya Party chairman said, “I hope that you will respond to my proposal. I am wainting for your positive respond,” the letters said.
