Ershad trying to appease AL

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has recently been making frequent statements against the BNP to apparently appease the ruling Awami League (AL), party insiders said.
The leadership of the ruling party is visibly unhappy with Ershad following his futile move to bring Jatiya Party (JP) out of the government.
“The JP Chairman started his current spell of anti-BNP statement from July 9, a day after a court fixed date of hearing of a corruption case against him,” a JP Presidium member told The New Nation on Tuesday, requesting not to be named.
“Earlier in the last week of June and first week of
July, Ershad seriously put pressure on Begum Raushan Ershad to withdraw party Presidium member and Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister for Labour and Expatriate Welfare Mujibul Huq Chunnu and State Minister for Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga from the cabinet,” another JP Presidium member said, adding, “Ershad made a number of speeches asserting that popularity of the ruling Awami League (AL) is waning fast due to the government’s failure.”
But, Ershad shifted his policy on July 9, when he realized that the government was seriously annoyed due to his move. “Then he started appeasing the ruling party to gain support from the powerful quarters through anti-BNP posture,” the JP leader said.
The JP Chairman, who was scheduled to leave Dhaka for Delhi on Sunday on a weeklong ‘private visit,’ had to postpone his trip to India because he did not get appointment with any senior Indian politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Earlier, he had frantically tried to have an exclusive meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to enhance his stature as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister. But he couldn’t get the appointment, the JP leader said, adding, ” So now retired General thinks his critical statements against the BNP will help him earn soft corner from Sheikh Hasina.”
The latest on Tuesday, Ershad made a public statement saying, “The BNP has now become a ‘vagabond party’, which is suffering from ‘serious internal conflict.”
“The internal conflict in BNP is nothing but a blessing of the god on Jatiya Party,” he said.
Addressing an ifter party hosted by Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad at a city hotel yesterday evening, Ershad asserted, “We will organize Jatiya Party upto the grassroots level after Eid and our party will fill up the ‘political vacuum’ created by BNP.”
