A new political alliance named “Sommilito Jatiya Jote” or United National Alliance [UNA] was formed under the auspices of JP Chairman HM Ershad at a programme in the city’s Jatiya Press Club on Sunday.
Jatiya Party leaders said, a total of 58 parties and two small alliances have gathered under the
umbrella of newly formed alliance where JP Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader has been made the spokesman.
Of the two alliances, the Bangladesh National Alliance [BNA] is a forum of 21 political parties, while there are 35 political parties in the Jatiya Islami Mohajote led by Maulana Abu Naser Wahed Faruk.
As per criterion, the total number of political parties in the new alliance is 58, including Bangladeshi Islami Front and Jatiya Party.
“The alliance has been formed for the sake of the country and the nation. We will join the next national election. Candidates will be fielded in all the 300 seats. We will participate in all the elections,” JP Chairman HM Ershad said.
Interestingly, three parties only including Ershad-led JP and Bangladesh Islami Front of the alliance are registered political parties. Rest 56 alliance members are signboard-based organizations without any registration.
During announcing the name of alliance, HM Ershad, however, said ‘the spirit of independence, Bangladeshi nationalism and Islamic value’s would be the main principles of the new alliance.
But there are two minority-based organizations namely Sachetan Hindu Party and Jatiya Hindu League. Besides, there is another party named Bangladesh National Minority League.
Ershad said, the Sommilito Jote will be the alternative political force outside the circle of Awami League and the BNP led alliances. He also hoped that more parties are likely to join the alliance in the future.
When asked, the JP chief said, “Jatiya Party is no more with the Awami League led 15-party grand alliance.”
Earlier, the JP Chief had taken initiatives to form “Sommilito Jatiya Oikya Jote” with the combination of Bangladesh Islami Front, BNA and Jatiya Islami Mohajote. He also met them for several times in this regard in the last four months.
Finally, a meeting was held in the residence of Ruhul Amin Howlader in the city’s Gulshan on Saturday night where Ershad was also present.
It could be mentioned here that, getting patronization from Ershad, leader of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal ASM Abdur Rab had formed an opposition alliance named Combined Opposition Party or COP, consisting of 76 insignificant parties in 1988.
The main task of the alliance was nothing but participation in the national elections in 1988 which was boycotted by major political parties, including Awami League and BNP. It had played role as a pet political opposition.
