Radar purchase: Ershad, 2 others acquitted

 The Metropolitan Session’s Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Wednesday acquitted Jatiya Party President Hussain Muhammad Ershad and two others in the radar purchase graft case.
Judge Quamrul Hossain Mollah of the court passed the order. Two others who were acquitted are former Air Force Chief and retired Air Vice-Marshal Sultan Mahmud and former Air Force Chief Momtaj Uddin Ahmed. Another accused AKM Musa, director of United Traders, was earlier exempted from the charge.
On April 12, the court fixed April 19 for delivering the verdict in the long-pending radar purchase scam case against HM Ershad and three others.
Now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed the case against former military ruler Ershad and three others with Cantonment Police Station on May 4 in 1992. The charge sheet of the case was submitted in the court on October 27, 1994. The court framed charges against the accused on August 12 in 1995.
According to the case statement, the accused in collusion with one another, bought such radars as caused a loss of Tk 640,442,918 to the national exchequer.
A few other cases, including Major General Abdul Manzur murder case, are still pending against HM Ershad.
