Erosion in the Jamuna River has started in the Southern part of Chowhali upazila in Sirajganj districr washing away in last one week several homesteads and crop lands of Khas pukhuria and Baghutia union.
Upon receiving the news, officials of the Tangail Water Development Board, visited the area on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Solaiman Bhuiyan, Sub-Assistant Engineer of Tangail Water Development Board said that some Geo-bags would be dumped on an emergency basis to prevent untimely erosion.
In addition, if the Permanent Embankment Conservation Project is approved, the Southern Region will be protected from river erosion; there is nothing to be panic about it. Baghutia and Khashpukhuria unions have been most affected by the continuous river erosion in the Chowhali upazila, which was devastated by the erosion of the Jamuna. Especially in the Southern part of the area, the only cemented roads connecting the Upazila Sadar including with half a hundred of educational institutions and many houses and lands have also been devoured.
Thousands of people in the south have been suffering immensely due to this. Though, hundred crore of taka has been spent on the construction of the City Protection Dam to protect the Upazila Sadar, but the locals have expressed their discontent that nothing has been done to protect the eroded areas in the South except dumping some essential geo bags during the flood.
Meanwhile, the geo-bags dumped during the floods on the river banks of Khas pukhuria and Baghutia union are collapsing due to depletion of water in the Jamuna. Upon receiving the news, Solaiman Bhuiyan, Sub-Assistant Engineer of Tangail Water Development Board visited the area immediately.
