EP team due Feb 17 to see BD’s HR situation

Amid the volatile political situation, a delegation of European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights is
likely to visit Dhaka from February 17 to 20 to witness human rights situation in the country.
The EU Delegation to Bangladesh has already communicated with the Foreign Ministry here seeking support for the visit, said an official at the Foreign Ministry.
The delegation members are Vice President of Vice-Chair of the European People’s Party Christian Dan Preda, members Josef Weidenholzer, and
 Karol Karski along with two officials and one advisor of the European Parliament.
The delegation will meet Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Law Minister Anisul Huq.
During their visit, the delegation would also hold meetings with civil society members and NGOs’.
They will also discuss the proposed broadcasting policy of Bangladesh, among other issues, during the visit.
The sub-group of Joint Commission of Bangladesh-EU will also be held in Dhaka at the end of this month. It has three broad components- trade, human rights and development.
Bangladesh is now passing through a tough time as opposition BNP, which boycotted the January-5 elections enforced countrywide transport blockade and hartal programmes demanding fresh polls under a neutral administration.
The European Union did not send any election observer during the last national election.
