High Commissioner of Australia to Bangladesh Julia Niblett presented credentials to President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban here on Wednesday.
Welcoming the envoy, the President termed Australia as an important development partner of Bangladesh and expressed satisfaction over the existing bi-lateral relations between the two countries, President’s Press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.
The bi-lateral trade and investment have been increasing gradually, said the President and hoped that the trend would continue in the future.
President Hamid said many Bangladeshi students go to Australia for higher education and urged the envoy to take steps to widen the scope.
Julia Niblett said that she would work to strengthen the bi-lateral relations further and sought the President’s cooperation in discharging her assignment in Bangladesh.
Later, ambassador of Bhutan to Bangladesh Sonam Tobden Rabgye presented his credentials to President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban.
The President said Bhutan is a tested friend of Bangladesh. The bi-lateral relations between the two countries are gradually increasing after the independence of Bangladesh, he added.
Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh is interested to import electricity from Bhutan and appreciated Bhutan’s initiatives to consider Bangladesh as a trilateral development partner for Dorjilung (1125 MW) hydro-electric project under BBIN framework.
The President hoped that the implementation of the project will be expedited and Bhutan will consider to take Bangladesh as a partner in other future hydro-power projects as well.
Mentioning Bangladesh President’s four-day state visit to Bhutan last month, Sonam Tobden Rabgye said the visit will work as a milestone to develop the bi-lateral relations further.
Secretaries concerned to the President were present.
Earlier, on their arrival at Bangabhaban, the envoys were given guard of honor separately by a contingent of the President Guard Regiment.
